Phailin Cyclone in Puri – a Dreadful Experience for People in the Holy City

Cyclone Phailin is very severe cyclonic storm that affected different Indian States of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Andaman and Nikobar Islands. However, it also affected some other Asian countries like Myanmar, Thailand and Nepal. It raised its ugly head on October 04, 2013 within the Gulf of Thailand and spread its wings to India in Bay of Bengal on October 9, 2013. It exaggerated rapidly and converted into a severe cyclonic storm on October 10, 2013.

Next day, it approached Odisha Coastline where it made landfall near Gopalpur in Ganjam District. Phailin cyclone in Puri became the bystander of damage triggered by strong winds (more than 200 km/h) with fallen trees, uprooted poles and broken walls. Cyclone Phailin was officially the strongest storm ever measured in the Bay of Bengal.

Thousands of people ran away their homes to escape the ferocity of the Phailin cyclone at Puri. The Strongest cyclone ever in India on the Bay of Bengal also left its crash in Puri – the holiest Town in India known for Shri Jagannath Temple. The winds swept Odisha from Gopalpur to Paradip and Puri to other parts of the state. The dirge storm and the sight of trees being uprooted trees invigorated painful memories of the cyclone hit in 1999.

Puri Cyclone 2013 that affected entire state of Odisha resulted in a sudden fall in the influx of devotees and tourists. The holy town that was full of tourists became a deserted land for a few days (four to five days). However, leading hotels like MAYFAIR Puri started their guest service operations after two days of Cyclone. However, the rescue operations are continuous and the city will be once again neat and clean with the same influx of tourists until the coming grand festival season.
